Adam se Uitspanning, Orania

Adam se Uitspanning refers to the place where visitors can rest in old fashioned style in one of nine lovingly restored ox wagons.

These authentic ox wagons, built in the beginning of the previous century, are transformed into unique self-catering accommodation which guarantees an experience not to forget.

The Uitspanning is situated in an Eco park in the Upper-Karoo, which means springboks and smaller antelope, small predators and mammals, a variety of birds and reptiles can be expected to visit. Rock engravings from prehistorical nomads, British soldiers and early farmers can be seen in the vicinity.

The vegetation is typical of the semi-dessert plants adapted to the Upper Karoo with its harsh climate.
The wagons and its inhabitants are protected by a veranda and a stoep, which extends the living area. A fire place to braai and an anthill oven provides the facilities for a memorable night under the bright stars and the quiet veld of the Karoo.

The bathroom is right next to the wagon and has a shower with hot water and a flush toilet. Each wagon has its own character, deriving from the painting on the wagon’s ladder and the history of the wagon. Three of the wagons have private bathrooms, and 6 of them share a bathroom with their neighbouring wagon.

Turn your watch a century back and try to imagine how it was to travel with your whole family in an ox wagon through the Karoo veld, to span out during the heat of the day for the oxen to drink and rest, make coffee on an open fire, hunt for meat, milk the cow(s), do all the daily household tasks by lamp light… and tomorrow morning at day break the oxen must be spanned in again to trek further. But there was time to eat together as a family, read from the Bible and sing Psalms, do hand craft, talk to each other, tell stories, make music.

For the convenience of our guests we provide limited solar power for light in the bathroom and on the stoep, and a gas cooker for your morning coffee. Limited solar power is available to charge your cell phones, but sorry, no air conditioners, fans of hair dryers! Your great-grandmother made a bolla an put her kappie on, no bad hair days for her! We try to balance comfort with a unique historical experience.

If you can endure the scorching summer sun, icy winters, dusty winds, flies, midgets, mosquitos... (like the explorers, transport drivers, trekboere, hunters, the Voortrekkers and your forefathers did!), you will be rewarded by golden sunrises and sunsets, vistas with rough kopjes and ridges, iron-stone, herbal Karoo bossies, peace and quiet...
